How does internet work on the iPhone 3G?

If you are on a Family Plan with AT&T, all that has to be done is a added 30$ a month to your family plan to use unlimited internet on your iPhone anywhere where there is a Edge or 3G network.
If you are not on a family plan then it may cost more since your not on a shared minuet plan or Text message plan.
iPhone operates on Wi-Fi. but dont get confused with Katreah Knight's answer that iPhone will connect to any Wi-Fi. Thats not ture. Wi-Fi will only automatically connect to a access point if you set it up to connect to a frequently used Access Point. In other words, iphone will only connect to a access point with your permission if it finds a network near by. If you set it up to 'Automatically connect within range' Then you will automatically connect to it without having to set up or switch it to the wifi. Also 3G and Edge allows internet use, so if there is no Wifi you will be able to use safari and other internet apps except for iTunes store witch can only be used on a wifi network. using 3G and Edge, especially Edge network, you will experience slower speeds.Using wi-fi is free and dose not cost any extra charges to your plan.
**Also you cannot buy a iphone and not buy the internet package. You must purchase the iphone internet plan along side buying a iPhone.**
I live in BC, Canada and I'm looking to buy an iPhone. I am a teenager so my parents would be paying for the plan. My dad's really really stingy lol so he's really worried about the internet. Does it operate on WiFi? Or do you have to use airtime, if airtime, doesn't that cost like BIG bucks? I heard like a hundred dollars a month and I think my Dad would be really against that. Is the WiFi only option available?
The iPhone and the iPod touch come with Safari always. It's really easy and it's just like using a laptop for the Wi-Fi connection. It's a piece of cake. When the iPhone detects a Wi-Fi connection it automatically connects to it and you don't pay extra or anything. Just press on Safari and start browsing.
